A majority of countries have now abolished the death penalty in law or practice: of those that remain, 85% of executions are carried out by just four, the USA, China, Iran and Viet Nam. Of those countries which retain the death penalty, only three, the USA, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, continue to execute child offenders. Almost all of Europe, all of central and south America, large swathes of Africa and a growing number of countries in Asia are now free of the death penalty
